We had just returned home when I got an email from the region. The
local people were talking about the tears of the Irish. While
there we had listened to their stories – one from a man whose child
had died from exposure, another from a man who had lost two
daughters in the earthquake. Some of us were moved to tears. And now
these people were asking why we cared so much, when even their own
wealthy neighbours stood by and did nothing. We often feel that the
actual physical work we can do is so little, but by our presence we
show that we care.
