The men engaged
in a 2 week
project in Besham, eight hours North of Islamabad. There were 3 from
Wellington St - Robin Keys, Sammy Moore and Gareth Williams. The team had
been assigned to repair and upgrade a building complex – one which was
currently used for a weekly clinic, but which had the potential for much
more. "We repaired and plastered walls damaged by the earthquake,
breathed life back into two generators, overhauled the electrics and did
drainage and landscaping work. In temperatures around 35C’s, we found
the heat and dust challenging – the dreaded diarrhoea was a problem
too!. As always, the various skills and personalities of the team came
through – we did all that was asked of us (and mostly with a smile) and
discovered that God’s hand is in all the planning and
outworking.”
On
the final day of the trip they returned to Balakot
. Exactly
one year on from the earthquake, they found themselves on a familiar
hillside, greeting with handshakes and hugs the people they had built
shelters for.
Gareth comments: “It was great to see them again but disappointing to
see that they were still living in the same “temporary” shelters,
erected by us a year earlier. They have survived the winter snow and
fallen back into patterns of living. But have they adjusted to life
without the loved ones they lost? Have they any prospect of returning soon
to homes of bricks and mortar, to live with comfort and confidence?" |
