When Dr Keiran Martin, of ASHA, visited Wellington St. in Nov. 2001, we had no idea what God had in store for us - just 6 months later 13 of us would be on a plane to Delhi, to work in a slum community.
Five of the team were over 60 years of age and for most this would be a first in many respects. Nine would build a clinic for ASHA, the other four paint murals on walls in a children's centre.

ASHA is an Indian Christian organisation which is having a significant impact in over 30 of the slum communities in Delhi. It was the account of this work that persuaded many in our church that we should become involved. The initial response was the financing of a children's centre - on the back of this came the idea that some might like to paint its walls with murals. But not just those who could paint, but others with building skills, were lining up to help and the remit soon included building a clinic for ASHA. In temperatures which approached 40C, there was a lot of sweat, a good few laughs and no shortage of tears. Spending time with some of the poorest people in our world has left its mark.
